Playgroups
Playgroups have been around for years, and have long been
considered a blessing for both stay at home parent's and their young
children. A good playgroup can provide little ones with the social
interaction they need with children of roughly the same age.
It is also a great opportunity for parent's to interact with each
other and to discuss issues related to raising a family, while
having fun at the same time. Below are some general questions and
answers you may find helpful.
What exactly is a playgroup?
A playgroup is a general term that is used to define a certain
number of parents and their children who get together on a regular
basis to play and interact. Playgroups are generally
considered to be informal meetings, with no defined structure during
the time period the group meets. Free- play is common,
especially among younger children. Playgroups with children
ages 3 and older may sometimes plan short structured activities
(crafts, game, etc.) in addition to allowing time for free-play.
This provides older children the opportunity to learn to follow
directions and to interact as a group. A playgroups best
and most unique feature is that it can be modified in any way to fit
the specific needs and wants of its members.
How many moms and kids are in a playgroup?
A playgroup generally consists of up to about 8 moms or
dads and their children. A playgroup can have as few as two parents
and as many as the group allows. Keeping the group relatively
small is generally best for young children, who may become
overwhelmed by too many people. Keep in mind that playgroups do tend
to have a fairly high turnover rate, so reviewing the number of
active participants and adding members when needed is a good idea. Where
do playgroups meet? A playgroup can meet anywhere the
members decide is most appropriate. Many playgroups rotate
meeting at a different members home each week. This gives the
children exposure to different environments and provides some
variety for the parents. Playgrounds, zoos, parks, swimming
pools, and any other place appropriate for children can also
be used as a meeting place when weather permits. Many groups
use a sign up sheet and members commit to determining the playgroup
location for that week. This allows members to know the
schedule for a month or so at a time. Other playgroups decide where
to meet on a weekly basis. How long do playgroups
last? A playgroup usually lasts between 1 and 2
hours. The duration depends on the time of meeting, the
preferences of the parents and the ages of the children. Young
children usually need naps, and occasionally a playgroups arranged
meeting time will need to be permanently changed due to the changing
nap schedules of the children. How often do playgroups
meet? Playgroups meet as little or as often as the
members find most suited to their needs. Most playgroups meet
on a weekly basis. Some playgroups meet every two weeks, while
others meet two and even three times during the week. What
does the parent hosting the playgroup need to do to prepare? If
you are hosting playgroup in your home, make sure there is a
room or area in your house that has enough space for the
children to roam about freely. Supplying a set of toys for the
children to play with is also necessary for the playgroup to run
smoothly. Refreshments can be kept very simple.
Depending on the time of day, you might offer juice and small snacks
for the children and popcorn or a pastry, for example, to the
parents. If your group has chosen to meet over lunch, preparing
something simple, non-staining and easy to eat usually works best.
